Stormhawk’s Warning

[Kaden has received word that a messenger bird is coming.]

StormhawksWarning_AlduraKaden jumped from his bed. “Calm down, lad. Soften your voice or you’ll rouse everyone, if you haven’t woken them already. And I’ve told you, it’s Capt’n, not Prince.”

By the flickering light of the orderly’s torch, Kaden threw on black breeches, matching tunic, and stomped his feet into boots. Had Klatinan declared war? He strode out the door, snatching the torch from the younger man as he passed. Kaden’s boots thudded along the hallway’s wooden floor. Reaching the stairway, he dashed up taking the steps two at a time then climbed the ladder to the trapdoor. [Cover photo credit for original picture: (c) Teresa K. Cypher].

Alliandre

thumbnail_new_Alliandre_myblurbsWe found her the day we conquered the Isle of Ipsen Watch. From the decks of our ships, we spotted a young woman poised on the hill next to a hovel, her emerald green dress billowing in the breeze. When we reached the hut we discovered our eyes had deceived us over the distance. She was old even then, even in the early days of our conquest. We didn’t know her name, none of our shamans could discover it. We delved her mind, but only memories of events since our arrival in the harbor lay there. None of those included a name.

War Chief Gersand wanted her kept alive, hoping to discover the hiding place of the Guardian who lived on this island, and the secret of defeating the shield barring us from reaching the mainland of Ipsen. [ebook free on Amazon March 6th & 7th.]

Opening of Stormhawk’s Warning – Let me know if this would keep your attention – or what stands out good/bad.

bluebirdThe pounding of a fist on his door jarred Ranger Captain Kaden awake as the bells tolled two candlemarks to midnight. At his command, “Come” the door slammed open so hard it bounced off the wall.

A breathless orderly shouted, “Messenger bird comin’, Prince Kaden.”

Kaden jumped from his bed. “Calm down, lad. Soften your voice or you’ll have everyone awake, if you haven’t woke them already. And I’ve told you before, it’s Capt’n, not Prince.”

By the flickering light of the orderly’s torch, Kaden threw on black breeches and matching tunic, and stomped feet into boots.

Opening of the poem: Fall of Azraelis – Let me know if this would keep your attention – or what stands out good/bad.

When trolls attacked far away in the north,Azraelis_3

The Galdonan army had been sent forth.

Protecting Azraelis the King assigned

To the Royal Guard, who remained behind.

At the north border, the army did fight.

They were unaware of Azraelis’ plight.

Off to the south, more enemies did come,

The tramp of feet, like the beat of a drum.

Urdow demanded they kill and they maim.

What they did not kill, they destroyed with flame.

Their duty to Urdow clear and defined:

Slay Azrael’s children–all you can find.

Light glinting on spear-tips, off in the east,

Signaled the approach of Urdow’s war beast.

Warning horns sounded from on top the wall.

Warriors rushed to respond to their call.

From across the land the Galdonans came.

They numbered too few. They’d fight just the same.

Opening scene from Jezrei’s Justice:

Jezei's_Justice_AlduraThe war chants of the enemy barbarians and the pounding of thousands of feet marching to the deep bass beat of their drums woke Jezrei at dawn. Two candlemarks later the thud of catapult stones and the boom of battering rams slamming the city’s gates added their voices to the cacophony of sound flooding the city. Long before mid-day those sounds diminished, replaced by crackling flames, collapsing buildings and the screams of Kalieri dying in the City of Azraelis.

Jezrei tottered around the confines of the chapel in the Temple of Azrael. Sadness lined his face and hovered in his eyes as frail, age-spotted hands caressed the familiar furnishings. His fingers trailed along the backrests of cedar benches worn smooth from long use by the faithful, and traced the vine chiseled into the side of the stark, white stone altar—a vine without beginning or end symbolizing the continuity of the spirit throughout the planes of existence. A glowing, blue crystal replica of Aldura’s Heart sat on the corner of the Altar. It comforted him and chased away fears and worries.
