Review – Intrigues by Mercedes Lackey

Intrigues by Mercedes Lackey. [Book 2 of the Collegium Chronicles] I’ve found the Collegium Chronicles a good addition (time-line wise) for the Valdemar books.

I’ve always enjoyed the Valdemar books – so yes I’m biased.

The book was action packed and certainly lived up to its title with all plots and subplots. I did find the Kirball part a bit long and reminiscent of the a couple of the “game” developed in previously written books (I believe the ones about Alberich).

Things that always appeal about the Valdemar books are the Companions and the ethics of the Heralds, and because Herald trainees are generally young, the books serve as an encouragement to always try to do your best—to work up to and live up to your potential. Also that in this world $ and social status aren’t the most important considerations.

Regrettably the publisher skimped on proofreading/editing and there are typos and other errors in this book.

The Collegium Chronicles will never be my favorite books in this world but based on other books out there, they are a pretty decent read. I would have to say that if you haven’t read any of the other Valdemar books, this is not the series I would recommend as a starting point. Before reading this series, the reader needs to have already been exposed and enjoyed the World of Valdemar.
