#3 Name for groups of various Reptiles and Amphibians

frog or horse

While researching for terms and/or names for groups of animals, I found lists for everything. I thought I’d share and this week there are multiple “flavors’:

  Reptiles and Amphibians

  • Crocodiles:  A bask
  • Frogs:  An army
  • Toads:  A knot
  • Turtles:  A bale, nest
  • Snakes, vipers:  A nest

  • Fish in general:  A draft, nest, school, shoal (some authors claim that the common “school” is a corruption of shoal, and therefore incorrect)
  • Bass:  A shoal
  • Herring:  An army
  • Sharks:  A shiver
  • Trout:  A hover

  • Ants:  A colony
  • Bees:  A grist, hive, swarm
  • Caterpillars:  An army
  • Clams:  A bed
  • Cockroaches:  An intrusion
  • Flies:  A business
  • Gnats:  A cloud, horde
  • Grasshoppers:  A cloud
  • Hornets:  A nest
  • Jellyfish:  A smack
  • Locusts:  A plague
  • Oysters:  A bed

(groups of various animals, etc I found lists here: http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/about/faqs/animals/names.htm)

  1. Here we go with another fun one. My favorites: a shiver of sharks, a business of flies and and intrusion of cockroaches. Thanks for the amusement, Susan.

    • I thought this bunch got the “short end of the stick” – since most of the are nests etc. I was fascinated (as you can tell by my posts) about all the terms and how appropriate some of them are.
